An article in the Times has reminded people how easy it can be to cook up a storm in the oven using simple ingredients.
People who did not manage to get their weekly shop done on Saturday or Sunday have been offered advice on how they can use their ovens to create a simple, tasty meal after a five-minute sprint around the supermarket.
Lucas Hollweg from the Times said it should be possible to put together an appetising dinner from three ingredients, offering lamb chops, a jar of pesto and a bag of salad as an example.
He added if shoppers allow themselves five items, it will be even easier.
As soon as they walk through the door, people are advised to put the oven on.
Mr Hollweg stated: "By the time you've said hello to anyone who needs saying hello to, poured a glass of wine and rung your mum ... it will be hot enough."
He added creating a meal from the simple ingredients chosen at the supermarket should take no more than 20 to 30 minutes.
Making sure your oven is fit for purpose could be an essential task too. One model currently on the market at the lower end of the price scale could be the Hotpoint SY36X, which is rated B for energy and also comes with an electronic timer.
Sometimes you don’t even have to go to the supermarket, chances are that your cupboards and fridge freezer already have some key ingredients to help you make some quick and easy dishes. Why not create a quick and easy pasta salad? Throw together everything in the salad drawer in your fridge from red onion to cherry tomatoes and cook some pasta – allow to cool and there you have it a simple, healthy filling snack. Why not think ahead and make more than you need and store some in the fridge ready to take to work the next day, that’s two meals sorted without having to spend more money!
When having a quick shop – always stock up on essential store cupboard ingredients as you can throw together some really simple dishes quickly and easily as long as you are prepared. The items which should be on your list should include pasta, rice, potatoes and beans. Also pick up some meats – you can always store these in the freezer, chicken and beef are great for adding into one pot dishes such as stews or soups.
Also try storing frozen vegetables in the freezer – they still contain their nutritional values and taste but will last much longer as you will only use them when you need to.
Make sure when you shop you always throw in a few essentials as they can come in really handy when you don’t have the time to keep shopping and cooking for fresh items.
